First look at Mordizan by Alyssa Roat and Author Interview

Mordizan
Alyssa Roat
(The Wraithwood Trilogy, #2)
Publication date: March 15th 2022
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

The bane of Mordred, the son of Mordizan, and a millennia-old prophecy—together they may provide what Brinnie needs to defeat the world of magic’s greatest threat.

More than a year has passed since Brinnie left Wraithwood, never expecting to see it again. But when Mordred captures her sister, she is thrust back into the world of magic. She flees to Wraithwood, where she learns of a prophecy located in the dark wizard capital of Mordizan that reveals the identity of “Mordred’s bane,” something that could destroy Mordred for good.

Brinnie agrees to a rendezvous with Mordred to exchange herself for her sister, going undercover at Mordizan as a spy to find the prophecy and Mordred’s bane. There, she weaves a complicated web of secrets, lies, and tenuous friendships. She makes an unexpected ally in Marcus Vorath, son of the Master of Mordizan, who fears the implications of Mordred’s growing power. But in Mordizan, friends and foes may be one and the same.

In the midst of court intrigue, battle, ominous new depths to her power, and searching for Mordred’s bane, Brinnie struggles to draw the lines. How far is she willing to go to destroy Mordred? And how much of herself is she willing to give up along the way?

Author Interview

1. When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I started writing “stories” when I was around four years old. My handwriting wasn’t great, my books were made out of construction paper, and most plots centered around dinosaurs, but it was a start. By late elementary school, I knew I wanted to be an author someday.

2. Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?

I’ve done a lot of different types of writing, but YA fantasy is my favorite. I love the high stakes, emotional character relations, and creative worldbuilding that are hallmarks of the genre. When I read, I like to be transported to a new and exciting world, and I feel the same way about writing.

3. Are you a full-time or part-time writer and how does that affect your writing?

I have a full-time job in corporate data analysis, as well as a part-time position as the managing editor for a speculative fiction imprint, so I’m a part-time writer. I definitely feel the pressure of writing deadlines.

4. Do you have a special time to write, or how is your day structured to accommodate your writing?

Because of working a full-time job while also managing an imprint, I have to fit in writing around my schedule. Fifteen minutes here while waiting for a workload to come in from a client, an hour there after work before dinner. I usually get at least half an hour of writing in after work, and during the weekends I try to have at least one writing session that’s a few hours long.

5. What have you written so far?

I have five books published at this point, with five more under contract. They span from superhero chat fiction, to sweet contemporary romance, to YA fantasy. I’ve also written hundreds of articles for newspapers, magazines, and online publications, and short stories and poems for anthologies, so I’ve dabbled in a lot of different things.

6. Favorite activities to relax?

Reading, of course! But also playing with my crazy cat, Kookoo, watching Disney movies, and playing Dungeons & Dragons.
